Edith known to family and friends as "Gertie"was the eldest daughter of Francis and Ellen Andrews nee Mills. One of ten children, she helped her father to keep the family together when their mother died suddenly after their four year old son, William George died in November 1879. Francis, who had been a Bank Manager for the Agra Bank in Hong Kong, returned home and started The London and Colorado Investment Company of Winchester Street London. After his second marriage to Emilie Smalley, a widow with two children, he made many trips to the Colorado area, investing in silver and smelting operations and establishing a home there. Sadly the children did not fare well under the care of the wicked Step-mother. Upon his return, he ensured this did not happen again. Gertie took a nursing course. She met and married Dr. Francis "Frank" William Clark both a physician and Barrister, in June of 1889. Sadly, her father passed away suddenly in September of the same year. Gertie moved to the far east with Frank who held various posts in Mukden, Manchuria; Wei-hai-wei, China where she organized and took part in the entertainments for the British troops stationed there. Since her husband's retirement to Hetfordshire, she was one of the leaders in the Women's Institute at Hunton Bridge, King's Langley, where her dramatic and musical talents were once again employed. Her only daughter, Hilda Gertrude Mallard Clark married Hugh Blackwell Layard Dowbiggin OBE of Hong Kong. Gertie was diagnosed with Cancer in 1931. Frank nursed her and was at her side when she passed in June of 1932. Her husband Dr. Francis Clark who died in London, April 1940 was cremated and is resting with Gertie.
