LEXINGTON—Funeral services for Mr. Jack Nelson Taylor, Sr., 98, of Lexington will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, October 29, 2016 at Lexington Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11:00 am at the church. Burial will be Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at Fort Jackson National Cemetery at 11:00 am with military honors.
Jack was born to the late John B. Taylor and Daisy Browder Taylor in Greeleyville, SC. Early in his life he joined the Merchant Marines and served on the ships Stony Creek and Olambala during WWII. Jack caught the eye of his future wife and said, “she had the fastest feet he ever saw and he said he wanted to meet that girl.” They became dancing partners for life, and were married November 26, 1938. The couple celebrated their 77th anniversary in November of 2015.
He operated a Shell Station on Garner’s Ferry Road for many years, was salesman for Pan Ready Potatoes, and a salesman for Edisto Farm Dairies. Jack was the oldest Member of Pacific Masonic Lodge #325, a member of the Edisto Farms Dairy Bowlers, a member of the Dutch/Shellback Senior Bowlers, and a former member of Chapin Baptist Church and a member of Lexington Baptist Church.
Jack was predeceased by his wife Marguerite Harrison Taylor; daughter, Janice T. White; and brother, The Reverend J. Ed Taylor.
Survivors include daughter, Bonnie T. Hook (Tom) of Elgin; sons, J. Nelson Taylor, Jr. (Margaret) and Ed Taylor (Jean) both of Columbia; and niece, Martha Knox of West Columbia. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and twenty-four great-grandchildren.
