John Patton Dehart is the son of William M. Dehart and Sarah Lovelace. He was a well known country doctor in Swain and surrounding counties.Education on his death certificate is listed as common school.

In 1861, John Patton enlisted in the Confederate States of America as a Private in the 1st Calvary, Company K, 9th Regiment.

He married Margaret Lavina Miller in Franklin, Macon County, NC on 2 September, 1849. She died around 1850.

John Patton married Mary Thompson or Thomasson 13 January 1855 in Macon County, NC. 1860 census lists John P. and Mary with children: James MR, Sarah SA, and Cintha E. They also had another child, John Allen Beuregard, born 1869.

1870 and 1880 census lists him with his 3rd wife, Samantha E. Taylor. They had 2 children together, Victoria Jane Dehart and Belzoria Minerva "Belle" Dehart. In 1883 Samantha divorced John Patton.

His liason with Anner Smith in 1887 produced a child, George Washington Dehart.

On 3 September 1899,at the age of 68, he married Sarah Sally Green Shepherd, age 31. 1900 and 1910 census lists them both living in Nantahala township in Swain County NC.

John Patton Dehart died 11 January 1916 from pneumonia in Nantahala, Swain County, NC. He is buried atop a hill in Maple Springs Baptist Church Cemetery off Needmore Road in Swain County, NC.
