George Dascher was born in Switzerland and came with his family to Sauk county, Wisconsin, when he was twelve years old.
When the government was enlisting young men to fight in the Civil War, he joined Company K, 26th Wisconsin Infantry, the so-called "German" regiment, a company noted for its fighting thoughout the Civil war. He saw action at the second Battle of Bull Run, Chancellorsville, Virginia and Gettysburg with the Army of the Potomac. After Gettysburg he went under Joe Hooker to Chattanooga, Tennessee, to help raise the siege, and took part in the famous "Battle Above the Clouds" on Lookout Mountain. He fought under General Sherman in his Atlantic campaign and his "march to the sea." George finished his army service in the Civil war as a confederate prisoner and could not be with his regiment in the grand review at Washington, D. C. He had been a member of Eagle Post, G. A. R., Eau Claire, for many years.
George had three wives and fifteen children. His first marriage was to Johanna Rieple, who emigrated from Germany with her family in 1855. There were seven children born to Johanna and George. After Johanna died he married Katherina Schneider. She had also emigrated with her family from Germany. George had eight more children during this marriage. He later married a widow, Maria Plunz Kurth. In his later years, George lived in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, with his daughter, Agnes, and her daughter and two granddaughters.
George was buried next to his second wife, Kate, in the Montana Ridge Cemetery, Buffalo County, Wisconsin.
