Vernon Philip “Gilly” Gehlbach, 96, of Lincoln died at 5:20 a.m. on Saturday (Oct. 1, 2016) at The Christian Village, Lincoln.

Gilly was born Feb. 24, 1920 in Lincoln, Illinois, son of Elmer and Alma Werth Gehlbach. He married Amy Anderson on May 22, 1955. She preceded him in death on Jan. 11, 2013. He was also preceded in death by his parents.

Surviving Gilly are his children, Lois (Scott) Smeja, Daryl (Janet) Gehlbach and Gary (Susan) Gehlbach; two sisters, Norma Rankin and Doris Howell; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Gilly was a World War II U.S. Army Air Corps pilot veteran. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where he was a longtime elder. He taught Sunday school, served as a weather observer, was Courier Man of The Month on Feb. 27, 1969, and was a PTA President for Central School. He was a partner of Sheers Auto Supply from 1949-1991.
