After Joe completed his freshman year at Gerstmeyer Technical High School at the age of 16 he joined the CCC Camp (Civilian Conservation Corps) to help his family. Joe was involved with State Park Camp (SP-8) in Vigo County, Indiana which was active 1937-1939 in Otter Creek Twp of Vigo County, Indiana. The camp was located where a 365 acre amusement park once stood before The Great Depression along Otter Creek.

In 1940 Joe lived with his parents at 1104 S 1st Street, Terre Haute, Vigo, Indiana working construction as a stone cutter. He married his sweetheart Annamae Flora in Henderson, Henderson County, Kentucky on Saturday, September 21, 1940 with his mother Nellie (Barrett) Merritt, sister Sarah (Merritt) Johnson & brother-in-law Ed Johnson present.

Joe held several trades; working carpentry, stone cutter, signal man for railroad & laborer. He drove a semi for Union Fabricating & others. His children enjoyed his trips hauling produce as they ate all they wanted when they would accompany him on his short trips; returning home to mother with upset bellies.

Joe loved fishing at his cabins on the Wabash River, gardening, family, telling jokes, laughing & singing short tunes. If you were in ear shot you could hear him hum about his day. You couldnÂ't help but smile when Joe was around. He is dearly missed by family & friends.
