Cornelius was born to Levi and Rhoda Jane Nicholson on 28 October, 1868, in Daviess County, Indiana, the 12th child of 14 children. He grew to adulthood on a farm, and continued that occupation all his life, in and around Daviess County. He married Nancy Isabell Laughlin on 25 November, 1888 in Daviess County, and to this union one known child, a son, Guy Elva was born in 1891. Cornelius passed away in 1941 and is buried in the Scotland cemetery beside his bride who preceded him in death in 1936.
