Sylvester Layton was 21 years old when he was mustered into Co. A of the 27th Regiment of Indiana Voluteers 1 Sep 1861 and a paroled prisoner at his death 27 Dec 1862 in a hospital in Annapolis, MD. He died shortly after being released from Libby Prison near Richmond, Virginia and transferred to the Annapolis hospital.

He was the second son of George Preston Layton and Elizabeth Lamar Layton. Although born in Union County, by the 1860 census, his family had moved into Floyd Township of Putnam County, Indiana. His older brother John was also killed in the Civil War battle at Antietam and is buried there. A younger brother Andrew Thomas suffered from his injuries in the war until his death in 1925 in Indianapolis where he and his wife are buried at Floral Park.
