John Riley Chitwood is noted (John 153-4) in the book "Descendants of Matthias Chitwood" on pages 171-2. Son of Shadrach & Margaret Chitwood and husband of Barbara Cassel. Barbara is the daughter of Peter Cassel and Elizabeth Gragg-Cassel. It is likely that every Chitwood from Wisconsin descends from John Riley & Barbara Chitwood. A few of their 15 children are buried here in Felton along with the generations that follow.

John Riley was born in NC, married in TN 1804 and with a large group (father in law and his family along with at least 2 married sisters) moved to Rush County, IN around 1823-24. The family unit grew and expanded into Grant, Madison and Howard County Indiana over the next 20 years. In 1854-55, a large group (his married children and their families, his kids still living with him, and others) moved to Richland County WI (Akan, Sylvan and Richwood Township predominately).

John Riley and Barbara's farm was in Akan Township (10N 2W) Section 5 NE 1/4 quarter. It is noted in "The History of Richland County" (pg 183, & in "The History of Crawford and Richland Counties" pg 972) that he lived there from 1855 until his death in 1875. Many of his children had farms in the surrounding area.
