BIO:
Nellie Marie Hicks was born in Walla Walla, Washington, to Callie Theodore Hicks and Mae Elizabeth Kinney Hicks. Nellie was the 4th born of eight children: Lawrence 'Larry', Ellen, Betty, Nellie, Mildred (Micki), Violet, Jenny, and Pearl.

Growing up, Nellie was raised in nearby Waitsburg, WA. Nellie attended a small school of 12, and six were her siblings. When her parents moved to Grandview, WA in 1945, Nellie left high school to go to work. Through her work at a restaurant, she met a co-worker named Agnes Voss who invited Nellie to her home for a Halloween party. It was there that Agnes introduced Nellie to her son, Gerald Michael Voss (Sr) who was home on leave from the Navy. Gerald and Nellie were married six months later April 13, 1946.

Nellie and Gerald raised their family in Grandview, WA and later moved to Warden, WA.

Nellie's father (Callie Hicks) was a section foreman for the Union Pacific Railroad. At one time, her parents lived in a railroad work train, with living quarters which was a series of box cars. As a result, Nellie always had a fascination for the railroad and collected train memorabilia.

Nellie spent a lot of time in her flower garden. Every year, she would make freezer jams from her grapes, strawberries, and raspberries to give family members. And every year, she made large Christmas 'baskets' for her children and their families with her homemade cookies, fudges, and candies - a tradition Agnes Voss also did each year. All year, when Nellie's children and grandchildren would come to visit her, she always had homemade cookies or candies on hand for them to enjoy.

Nellie enjoyed fishing with her husband and her brother Lawrence. She liked sturgeon fishing and camping as well.

Nellie liked to play cards. Whenever anyone came to visit, they eventually ended up in her living room around her dining room table playing cards, pinochle or '31'.

Nellie loved her family. 4th of July was an annual celebration event for siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, children and grandchildren to meet at Nellie's house. Many came from Canada, California and Texas staying to visit for a week or two. These events consisted of camping and potlucks of approximately 80 people.

Nellie was a 'giver to a fault' often sacrificing her own needs to the wants and needs of others.

Nellie strongly believed in remembering and paying homage to those family members who passed on. Every spring, Nellie would visit their graves and leave flowers.

Nellie was the glue which held her family together. 'That's what it is really about you know, family'. Nellie was proud of all her children. Nellie will be forever in our hearts, and forever missed.
