“Former Edwall and Spokane resident Ethel Menkel died Aug 29, 1996 at the Life Care Center in Ritzville, just two weeks from her 100th birthday. Graveside funeral service was held on Tuesday afternoon at the Greenwood Cemetery in Spokane.

Born on Sept 12, 1896, at Edwall, she grew up at Edwall and attended country school there before marrying John McDonald. While Ethel was carrying their daughter Phyllis, John became ill and died before the child was born.

In 1922, she married George Menkel and they lived and farmed at Edwall until they retired to Spokane in 1945. Mr Menkel died in June 1972. Mrs Menkel then moved into the Riverview Terrace Retirement Apartments, where she lived until her daughter Phyllis moved her to Ritzville in April 1989. While in Ritzville, she lived at the Briggs Home before moving into the Life Care Center in Feb 1990, where she resided until her death.

Mrs Menkel was a 50-year Golden Sheaf member of the Neighborhood Grange at Mica, a 50-year member of The Three Link Rebekah Lodge at Reardan and was a holder of a Washington (100-year) Centurion Farm Certificate.

She is survived by two granddaughters, Diane and Gail; two step-grandsons, Mike and Chris; 8 great-grandchildren; one niece and one nephew.

She was preceded in death by her husbands John McDonald in 1920 and George Menkel in 1972; one daughter, Phyllis Mann in March 1995; and an infant son.”
