He must have died around 1890, as his widow remarried about 1893.

For several years it was thought that this was "Alexander, Jr.", and that he had perhaps divorced what would have been his second wife and gone to Missouri, where he married a third time. But then the 1870 census record was located for that other Alexander, who spelled his name Monteer, making clear that Cornelia was just his second wife and that this Alexander was only married once.
----------------------
In 1840 he and his parents and four siblings lived in Franklin Township, Armstrong County, PA. Also living with them was another adult woman--possibly his mother's sister.

In 1850 he and his parents and seven siblings lived on a farm in Wilmington Township, Lawrence County, PA.

In 1860 he and his wife and their two children lived on a farm in South Buffalo Township, Armstrong County, PA.

In 1870 he and Mary and their seven children lived in Worth Township, Butler County, PA. He was a carpenter, and owned personal property worth $100.

In 1880 he and his wife and nine children lived in Neshannock Township, Lawrence County, PA. Alex was a carpenter.

Their other child was:
Mary (Minteer) Cleveland(?) (1859- )
