Elmer Lee Underwood, 92, of Bushnell, Fla., and formerly of Clayton, N.C., died on Friday, July 22, 2016, after an extended illness.

Born in Athens on Oct. 28, 1923, he was a son of the late Charles Hayes and Minnie Malone Underwood. Elmer was a U.S. Navy veteran, a brick mason, home builder, and minister who pastored many Baptist churches in East Tennessee. He was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church in Clayton, N.C. In his later years he moved to Bushnell, Fla., where he loved fishing and lived until his last days. He was a loving father to his children and he truly touched the hearts of many people.

Mr. Underwood is preceded in death by his wife, Betty McKeown Underwood; brothers, Hubert Underwood and Prois Underwood; and sisters, Edna Holder, Marie Arnett and Helen Womac.

Survivors include Diana Monroe and husband, Terry, of Boone, N.C., Alan Underwood and wife, Denise, of Bushnell, Fla., and Denise Terzak and husband, Ed, of Charlotte, N.C.; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Underwood Funeral Home in Smithfield, N.C., on Thursday, July 28, from 6 until 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, July 29, in the chapel at Underwood Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Jackson officiating. Burial will follow at Knollwood Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethesda Baptist Church, 4967 U.S. Hwy. 70 Business West, Clayton, NC 27520.
