Opelousas - Funeral services will be held for Charles Louis Bernard, age 83, at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 28, 2016, in the Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home Chapel in Opelousas, LA. Reverend Perry Hubbs will conduct the funeral service. Burial will take place at Bellevue Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Bernard, a resident of Opelousas, LA, died on Sunday, July 24, 2016, at his residence.

Charles served his country proudly as a Lieutenant in the Louisiana National Guard. He was a cattle and soybean farmer all of his life. He was a member of the Louisiana Cattleman's Association and Farm Bureau. He was very involved in politics and was a very proud Republican.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Opelousas. He belonged to the Gideon's International Company where he loved spreading the Gospel of the Christ and his personal testimonies. He also participated in several missionary retreats to India and enjoyed listening to Southern Gospel Music.

Charles is survived by his wife, Lydia Mae (Hunt) Bernard; his daughters, Michelle Bernard, Tricia Lea (Bernard) Disheroon; his step-daughters, Rebecca (Tate) Chelette, Denise (Guillory) Blanchard, Gwen (Guillory) Guillory, Tessie (Guillory) Shoemaker, Susan (Guillory) Pickett; his sisters, Joseline (Bernard) Cormier, Gloria Martha (Bernard) Hunt and his step-son, Richard Tate. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Chad Tate, Melissa (Chelette) Segura, Lori (Chelette) Everett, Charles "Dylan" Disheroon, Hannah Leigh Disheroon, Allison (Fusilier) Brown, Jon Fusilier, Wesley Blanchard, Rebecca (Guillory) Rhodes, Donovan Guillory, Jeremy Bondick, Nichole (Bondick) Swanzy, Lea (Pickett) Smith; great-grandchildren, Noah Christian Tate, Genevieve Elizabeth Tate, Joseph Michael Segura, Jack Preston Segura, Scott Brown, Preston Brown, Isabella Brown, Layla Fusilier, Ellie Fusilier, Elijah Ridge, Karli Swanzy, Haley Swanzy, Addison Swanzy, Lyla Swanzy, Adele Rhodes and Penelope Rhodes.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois (Andrus) Bernard; his sons, Kenny, David and Mark Bernard; his second wife, Loula Mae (Smith) Bernard; his grandparents, Alexandre and Elina Miller Bernrad and Sam and Josie Checker Stanford; his parents, Eric Louis and Lois Stanford Bernard; his brothers, Clarence Samuel Bernard and Ralph Bernard.

Visitation will be held at the Lafond-Ardoin Funeral Home of Opelousas on Wednesday, July 27, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. The funeral home will reopen at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday until time of services.

Pallbearers will be Edward "Sonny" Jenkins, Charles "Dylan" Disheroon, Chad Tate, Donovan Guillory, John Fontenot, Barry Bernard and Jim Lastrapes.
