Doris Gere, the mother of actor Richard Gere, died July 5, 2016, according to multiple news sources. She was 91.

Born Doris Tiffany to William and Anna Tiffany in Brooklyn, Pennsylvania, she graduated from Brooklyn Vocational High School and the University of Pennsylvania. She met her future husband, Homer Gere, in grade school in Brooklyn, according to her online obituary posted by the Thomas J. Pirro Jr. Funeral Home.

She married Homer, her childhood sweetheart, in 1945. After moving to North Syracuse, New York, in 1951, Doris Gere became a homemaker, raising Richard Gere and his siblings, Susan, Joanne, David, and Laura.

“She was a seamstress and loved quilting,” according to the obituary. “She was a member of the Plank Road Quilt Guild and especially loved making quilts for her family and friends.”

In addition to her son Richard Gere, she is survived by Homer Gere, her husband of more than 70 years; daughters Susan Gere, Joanne Gere, and Laura Gere; another son David Gere; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. July 9 at the Thomas J. Pirro Jr. Funeral Home, 3401 Vickery Road, North Syracuse, New York.
