Marilyn McMillan was born August 9, 1929 at the Cottonwood Maternity Hospital in Murray, Utah to Newel D. McMillan and Mary Cheever. She passed away peacefully in her home on Monday, June 27, 2016. She is survived by her sisters Beverly Bishop, Rae Frazier (Dick), several nieces, nephews and extended family. She is preceded in death by her parents and her brothers and sister, Newell Jr. McMillan (Nelma), Lavar McMillan (Ruby), Vernetta Erekson (Clain), and Janice Todd (Dean). Funeral services will be held at the Mt. Jordan Ward, located on 8950 S. 400 E., Sandy Utah on Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at 11:00. A viewing will be held prior to the services at 10:00. Interment will be at the Murray City Cemetery.

Marilyn attended Liberty Elementary and graduated from Murray High School in 1947. She was very active in all types of sports and was the president of the Girls Murray High Booster Club. She participated in Track and Field her junior and senior year. She took 2nd place in State for the shot put competition. Marilyn graduated from LDS seminary in 1947 and was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Marilyn loved softball, she played 1st base with the Shamrocks, the Utah State Girls Softball Team. Marilyn injured her knee and had surgery, she did not return to the Shamrock team. Once her knee healed, she played with the West Jordan Girl’s Softball Team for a number of years.

Marilyn started to work at Grand Central in Murray as a checker just before her 16th birthday. Later she was transferred to the 21st South store and moved into the office. Marilyn was later promoted to Security Officer where she oversaw all money transactions for the stores in Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Nevada, Montana and Idaho. Marilyn worked with and had a great relationship with the owner, Maurice Warshaw. Fred Meyers bought out Grand Central and Marilyn continued with her same responsibilities. She loved her job and between the two companies she retired after 46 years of service.

Marilyn and her sister Beverly started bowling at the Kohler’s Bowling Alley in Midvale. Marilyn took to bowling right off and loved it. She went on to bowl with numerous team members and in several different leagues. Marilyn bowled with Ilene Hatch for many years and they became very close friends. Marilyn and Ilene traveled all around the United States to compete in various bowling tournaments.

Marilyn was elected President of the WIBC (Women’s International Bowling Congress). During her term she worked hard to promote women’s bowling and have it better recognized throughout the state of Utah. Marilyn continued bowling on a senior league with friends until she literally did not have the strength to hold her bowling ball. At the end of the year banquet, the senior league recognized her for her dedicated work in promoting the sport of bowling and for her talent. She did not return to the league the following year and never bowled again.

Marilyn enjoyed both her job and bowling but she also loved spending time with her family. The McMillan family got together often for holidays and birthdays but the most memorable event was the Easter Egg Hunts at the old farm. Marilyn and Beverly started the first hunts by hiding dyed eggs for their younger sisters, Janice and Rae, and their niece Janet. As family members were married and had children the egg hunt grew in size. Pretty soon Marilyn had 24 nieces and nephews to hide eggs for. As the years passed, the family grew and we continued to hunt eggs each Easter. The last hunt was after grandma McMillan passed in 2002.

Marilyn was diagnosed with dementia and struggled with the disease for many years. She was able to stay in her home with care from her sisters and the last four years from her niece, Leslie. Her sister Beverly is grateful for the extended care Marilyn received from the nurses and doctors at Rocky Mountain Hospice and expresses a special thank you to Annie, her CNA.
