Elizabeth was born in New Hartford in 1777. She was the fourth child of Nehemiah Andrews and Phebe Benham. She married Titus Gilbert (son of Theodore Gilbert the Sauquoit pioneer)in May 1798 in New Hartford. They returned to Sauquoit where they had four sons: Hiram, Andrus, Grove and Titus Jr. Titus Sr. died in 1803.

Following Titus' death Elizabeth married Asa Shepard (another pioneer), a widow with two daughters, Patty and Nancy. Elizabeth and Asa had five children of their own: Ira, Jared, Asa Jr., Frederick and Martha. Elizabeth lived with Frederick in Schroeppel after Asa died. Elizabeth died 30 Aug 1865 at 88.

Elizabeth is the third great grand daughter of William Andrews of Hartford, a proprietor and the first school master of Hartford.

Gilbert Mills is named for Hiram and Andrus Gilbert who constructed many mills along Sauquoit Creek.
