Norman was born in 1780 or 1781. He was the fifth child of Nehemiah and Phebe (Benham) Andrews. He left New Hartford in the early 1800s to join his brothers Jared, Dennison and Ira in Orange County, NY. He married Elizabeth Walsh daughter of William and Mary (Morrell) Walsh. Norman and Elizabeth had three sons and one daughter but none have been identified by name.
