Mary Jane Phillips Edwards was born about 1825 in Robeson County, North Carolina, the daughter of Jordan Caswell Phillips and Hester Lee Phillips. On February 13, 1839 Jane married William Elias “Eli” Edwards in Robeson County, and they had six children: Margurett (pronounced Marguerite) "Maggie" Jane Edwards King, Eliza Edwards, Amanda Edwards, Jesse Edwards, Lumsey D. Edwards, and William Edwards. Jane died about 1878 and was buried probably somewhere in Robeson County. Her ancestry was English.

DNA testing reveals Jane and her direct female descendants and ancestors and their brothers are of the clan of "Helena" (mtDNA haplogroup H) who lived 20,000 years ago in the Dordogne region of southwest France near the present city of Perpignan on the Mediterranean, gathering oysters and hunting and creating cave paintings.
