William Elias “Eli” Edwards was born about 1820 in Kershaw, Lancaster County, South Carolina, the son of William Samuel Edwards, Jr. and Mary Barfield Edwards. He had several siblings, including Flora Edwards Brumble, William Owen Edwards, and Hugh Edwards. On February 13, 1839 Eli married Mary Jane Phillips Edwards in Robeson County, and he and Jane had six children: Margurett (pronounced Marguerite) "Maggie" Jane Edwards King, Eliza Edwards, Amanda Edwards, Jesse Edwards, Lumsey D. Edwards, and William Edwards. Eli died in May of 1870 and was buried probably somewhere in Robeson County. His ancestry was English.
