The 1880 US Census of Leeds, Jefferson Co., AL enumerated 41 Y/O William Robert Abercrombie and his 41 Y/O wife, Martha Adline (Robertson) Abercrombie. William Robert Abercrombie's occupation was dry goods merchant. Among the children listed was their 18 Y/O son, William Fendol Abercrombie, who was also listed as a dry goods merchant, so he was obviously working in his father's dry goods store in Leeds, AL but he died in 1886 shortly after his father. Also in the household was their 16 Y/O son, James Isaac Abercrombie, who in 1880 was working as a farmer but before 1900 (see 1900 US Census), probably soon after the 1886 death of his older brother, William Fendol Abercrombie, became employed in the family dry goods store in Leeds, AL. Also living in the household in 1880 were their other children: 14 Y/O Mary Cornelia Abercrombie, 9 Y/O Martha Elizabeth Abercrombie and 6 Y/O Andrew Jackson Abercrombie.

Andrew Jackson Abercrombie married Fannie Gillespie on 26 Oct 1892 in Jefferson Co., Alabama.

Andrew's two children were attending Leeds Elementary School at the time of their mother's death. One day, shortly after his wife's death, Andrew picked his children up from school in a carriage during a heavy rainstorm. The children's teacher happened to be waiting nearby and Andrew asked if he could give her a ride home. It just so happened this unmarried 19 Y/O young lady had recently received her teaching certificate from Livingston Normal College, an all female college at the time, located in the small south Alabama town of Livingston. Her name was Vennie Ream Fulton.

Andrew Jackson Abercrombie married secondly Vennie Ream Fulton on 31 May 1906 at Leeds, Jefferson Co., AL. Vennie Fulton was born on 06 Feb 1887 at Woodlawn, Jefferson Co., AL and died on 15 Dec 1962 at Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL. Andrew J. Abercrombie, Sr. died on 5 Nov 1950 in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL. The parents of Andrew Jackson Abercrombie were William Robert Abercrombie and Martha Adline Robertson Abercrombie.

Andrew's father, William Robert Abercrombie, had started the family business, a mercantile store, in Leeds, AL about 1870 (See attached photo). After his death in 1885, Andrew's older brother, John Henry Abercrombie, became the owner/postmaster of the business as the local post office was located in the store. In 1907 according to the Birmingham City Directory, John Henry moved to Birmingham, AL and got into real estate sales because Birmingham was booming. Andrew who had been working in the store since before 1900 took over as proprietor/post master of the general store. Sometime prior to 1920, Andrew rented out the store and was employed as an accountant for a cement plant in Leeds. About 1926/7, the Leeds' Abercrombie clan decided to move to Birmingham.

The 1910 US Census of Leeds, Jefferson Co., AL enumerated the household of 36 Y/O Andrew Jackson Abercrombie, Sr., merchant at family owned general store, and his 32 Y/O 2nd wife, Vennie Ream (Fulton) Abercrombie. Also living in the household were children: 15 Y/O Robert W. Abercrombie; 13 Y/O Fanny L. Abercrombie and 2 Y/O Andrew Jackson Abercrombie, Jr. Also living in the household was 71 Y/O Martha Adline (Robertson) Abercrombie, the mother of Andrew Jackson Abercrombie, Sr. The two oldest children were by his deceased first wife, Fanny. The youngest child, Andrew Jackson Abercrombie, Jr., was by his 2nd wife, Vennie.

Andrew's WWI Registration Card was issued in Birmingham , Jefferson Co., AL on 12 Sep 1918. He was living with his wife, Vinnie Ream Abercrombie and was described as medium height and build with blue eyes and blond hair. His occupation was an insurance agent for the "National Life and Accident Insurance Company".

The 1920 US Census of Leeds, Jefferson Co., AL enumerated the household of 48 Y/O Andrew Jackson Abercrombie, Sr., a book keeper at a cement plant, and his 32 Y/O wife, Vennie R. (Fulton) Abercrombie, a school teacher. Also living in the household were their children: 24 Y/O Robert W. Abercrombie, a draftsman at a cement plant; 22 Y/O Lucile F. Abercrombie, a public school teacher; 12 Y/O Andrew Jackson Abercrombie, Jr. and 8 Y/O Fulton Abercrombie. Obviously, Andrew, Sr. had given up running the family general store. Vennie Abercrombie continued to teach in the Leeds public schools until the family moved to Birmingham about 1927.

Andrew and his wife, Vennie, moved to Birmingham and first show up in the 1927 Birmingham, Alabama City Directory. He was employed as a "Tax Collector" for the IRS and remained so until his retirement. His son, Andrew Jackson, Jr. was recorded as a "student" in 1927.

The 1930 US Census of Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL enumerated the household of 56 Y/O Andrew Jackson Abercrombie, Sr., an Internal Revenue tax collector at the courthouse, and his 43 Y/O Vennie (Ream) Abercrombie. Also living in the household were their children: 22 Y/O Andrew Jackson Abercrombie, Jr., a bank clerk; 18 Y/O Warren F. Abercrombie and 7 Y/O Mary K. Abercrombie.

The 1940 US Census of Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL enumerated the household of 66 Y/O Andrew Jackson Abercrombie, Sr., a Federal Internal Revenue tax collector, and his 53 Y/O Vennie (Ream) Abercrombie. Also living in the household were their children: 28 Y/O Warren F. Abercrombie, a college professor, and 17 Y/O Mary K. Abercrombie, a college librarian assistant.

Obit: Andrew Jackson Abercrombie, 77, lifelong resident of Jefferson County, died yesterday at his home. Funeral services will be held tomorrow and burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Mr. Abercrombie is survived by his widow: three sons, W. R. Abercrombie, San Jose, Calif.; A. J. Abercrombie, Jr., Baltimore, Md., and Dr. W. F. Abercrombie, Decatur, Ga.: two daughters, Mrs. J. C. Roberts, Sacramento, Calif., and Mrs. H. V. Robins, Birmingham, Al: six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Abercrombie was a member of Sixth Avenue Presbyterian Church. He was a Scottish Rite Mason and a member of Zamora Temple Shrine. He had been active in the civic and religious life of his community for many years. Prior to his retirement in 1933, Mr. Abercrombie had been connected with the Internal Revenue Department here.
