Helen was the youngest of eight children born to Irish immigrants. She was a schoolteacher in Fall River, serving first at the Westall School, but for most of her career at the Brayton Avenue School, one of the school's neighborhood elementary schools. She retired to her family's house on Frost Street, which she inherited as the last living child of her family. She passed away at the age of 78.
