Catherine was born in either 1869 (as the death certificate indicated) or 1867 (as family tradition holds) in Ireland, the daughter of James and Catherine (Lenaghan) Powers. She immigrated to the United States with Maurice Donovan aboard the first HMS Britannic in 1887. They would marry seven years later in Fall River, Massachusetts and have eight children: Michael (died in infancy), Mary, James Lester, John, Maurice Francis Jr., Thomas, Joseph and Helen. She had diabetes, and would die in 1937 from a broken leg.
