Ailie Alina Koskela, 89, of Esko, died Sunday, August 24, 2008 in Suncrest Assisted Living in Scanlon.

She was born September 4, 1918 in Kettle River to John and Selma Siltanen. She attended Kalevala School.

On June 20, 1937, Ailie married Neil Koskela in Kettle River. In 1953, they moved to Cloquet. Ailie worked at Diamond Match for 27 years until retiring in 1980. She lived in Esko since 1975 and for the past year and a half, Ailie lived in the Suncrest Assisted Living.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and the Esko Senior Citizens. Ailie enjoyed baking, crocheting and flower gardening.

Ailie was preceded in death by her husband, Neil; son, Melvin; seven brothers, Eino, Arne, Alfred, Raymond, Waino, Olavi, and Edwin; and three sisters, Helvi Riihiluoma, Signe Riihiluoma, and Senja Siltanen.

She is survived by her daughter, Shirley (Walter) Behm of Esko; grandsons, Curtis (Jona) Behm of Littleton, CO, Rodney (Cindy) Behm of Duluth, and Thomas (Nicole) Behm of Esko; 7 great grandchildren, Brianna, Connor, Cayson, Cathrine, Hayden, Kaz, and Kallen; sister, Emma Laine of Duluth; and daughter-in-law, Frances Koskela of Esko. Ailie was dearly loved and will be sadly missed by her family and friends. The family would like to thank the staff at Suncrest Assisted Living for their wonderful and loving care of Ailie.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 28, 2008 in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Cloquet. Burial was in Apostolic Lutheran Cemetery in Esko. Arrangements entrusted to Northland Funeral Home in Cloquet.
