Cecile Gertrude Frey was born February 27th, 1877 in Gettysburg Pennsylvania the daughter of William H Frey (1851-1925) and Sara Jane Cecile Trostle (1853-1933)a nurse.

In 1900 Cecile was THE first woman graduate of Gettysburg College, two years after her future husband William Howard Sprenkle had graduated. William and Cecile were married in August of 1902.

Mrs. C. Gertrude Sprenkle
Mrs. C. Gertrude Sprenkle, 86, widow of William Howard Sprenkle, died yesterday at 1:15 a.m. at Washington, Pa., where she had been living with a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Edmunds, 86 Moger drive. Mrs. Sprenkle, who lived in York as a young woman, graduated from Gettysburg college in 1900, the only woman graduate in the class. She and her husband, who was Pittsburgh schools superintendent for more than 25 years, lived in Carrick, Pittsburgh, and later moved to Florida. She was a member of the Lakeview Presbyterian church, St. Petersburg, Fla.
In addition to Mrs. Edmunds, Mrs. Sprenkle is survived by two sons, William Howard Sprenkle, Glastonbury, Conn.; Robert Louis Sprenkle, Rochester, N.Y.; another daughter, Mrs. Esther Hildebrand, Coral Gables,Fla.; a brother, Norman E. Frey, Oakland, Cal.; two sisters, Mrs. Cora Shinaberry, Scranton; Mrs. Ethel Blasser, York; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Rev. Donald Matthews, rector of Trinity Episcopal church, Washington, will officiate at funeral services Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the chapel at Prospect Hill cemetery. Interment will be at the cemetery.
