Obituary excerpt: Thomas Henry Mugford, 82, a retired Southern Pacific Company machinist and a resident of Sacramento for 32 years, died last night in a local hospital following a brief illness.
He was the father of T. H. Mugford, vice chairman of the State Employment Stabilization Commission.
Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow noon in the East Lawn Cemetery Chapel. Rev. Robert Ferguson of the Fremont Presbyterian Church will officiate. Cremation will follow.
As a young man Mugford followed a number of gold rushes, including one to Alaska in 1896, and later ones in Nevada. Between prospecting trips and prior to the time he moved to Sacramento, he worked in mines in Amador County as a machinist. He entered the employ of the railroad upon arrival in Sacramento. He was a member of the Machinists Union.
Surviving him in addition to his son are his wife, Marie Louise, a daughter, Mrs. Helen Fraser of Napa, Napa County, and three grandchildren.
