Although her obituary did not state the cause of her death, numerous articles from the Amador Dispatch several days before and after Elizabeth's death talked about cases of diphtheria "taking our young".
Her obituary reads: Dying at 15 years of age, married barely a month, Elizabeth Mugford Whitford was buried in the Amador City Pioneer Cemetery on CInfohurch St. Her marker is just below [her father] Samuel Mugford's headstone and is surrounded by a black iron fence. Her headstone reads:
Farewell Elizabeth, Wife of Thomas Whitford
Died October 19, 1877 Aged 15 years
Nipt by the winds unkindly blast, or broke by
sickness in a day, the fading glory disappears,
the short lived beauties die away.
