Nevin was born on July 28, 1925, in Moscow Township, the son of John and Grace Lincoln Birkhofer. He married Frances Satterthwaite on May 7, 1944, at Spangler Chapel United Methodist Church in Muscatine.
He was a US Army veteran serving in the Pacific Theater from March of 1945 until October of 1946, during World War II.
He worked as a truck driver for Poole Trucking and Roadway, and was a member of the Teamsters Union. He loved racing.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Frances Birkhofer of Muscatine; two sons, David Birkhofer and wife, Carol, of Muscatine, and Fred Birkhofer and wife, Darla, of Camden, Missouri; two daughters, Carol Dieckman of Muscatine, and Sandra Maxwell of West Branch; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, John 'Bud' Birkhofer; and three sisters, Dorothy Smull, Norma Chambliss, and Lois Coram.
