"Galien Man, 33, Suffocates In Blazing Home
Hinman Found In Shower After Flames Quelled by Firemen

GALIEN, June 9 -- State Fire Marshal Norwood Neninger is expected to arrive from Paw Paw today to begin Investigation of the flash fire that claimed the life of 83-year-old Glenn Everett Hinman at his home early Sunday morning.

Hinman was found huddled, fully clothed, in the shower stall in his bathroom by Galien firemen shortly after 4 a. m.

A Benton Harbor pathologist, Dr. W. H. Benner, determined that Hinman died of suffocation and burns.

Galien Fire Chief Eldon Brewer said the fire was reported at about 4 a. m. by one of Hinman's neighbors, Mrs. Fred Jochem, about two hours after hinman had been driven home from a tavern by his father.

The inside of the house was in flames, windows were broken by the heat, and flames were coming out the shattered windows when the Galien department arrived, Brewer said.

Snuff Blaze Fast

He estimated It took the fire men about 10 minutes to put out the fire. The damage was confined largely to the interior of his home and the furnishings, Brewer said. There was some damage to the porch.

Investigation after the blaze was extinguished showed the electric clocks in the house stopped at 3:50.

Under state regulations, all fires in which there is a fatality or where the damage is estimated at over $50,000 are investigated by the state fire marshal's office.
