Mrs. William Slack, 61, her chest crushed in an automobile accident early Thursday morning, died the following morning after a painwracked 24 hours in which she had walked a quarter-mile through the timber in the dark for help.
Her funeral was Tuesday afternoon at the Kaiser chapel with Rev. R.C. Schlueter officiating. Burial was in the Andrews cemetery, Lafayette township. Casketbearers were Josh Chestnut, Bernard Greaeser, Fred Ingersoll, Henry Nuehring, Perry Renner and August Ruth.
The fatal accident happened at the east end of the new approach to the Schlaberg bridge when the Slack car, carrying Mr. and Mrs. Slack went off the grade. In some wau the couple managed to get out of the car and to make their way to their home.
Then Mrs. Slack, in spite of the fact that she was hurt and that her eyesight has been poor for years, set out through the woods for the Josh Chestmut farm to get help. Reaching there while it was yet dark, she phoned her son Wilbur in Waverly.
Mrs. Slack was returned to her home and then after her condition failed to improve, a doctor was called in the afternoon and she was taken to the local hospital, arriving there between 5 and 6 o'clock and dying shortly after midnight. Her injuries had included three broken ribs and a punctured lung.
She is survived by her husband, three sons and a daughter; Wilbur of Waverly, Lavern who lives at home but who was visiting in Oregon at the time, Arthur of Cedal Falls, and Esther, now Mrs. Smith of Cedar Falls. One som died at the age of nine.
Mrs. Slack was Bertha Weihe before her marriage and was born Sept. 8, 1880 at Buck Creek, growing up in that community.
