Elizabeth Bailey (Bayles, Bailes, Baley*) was the daughter of unknown. She is believed to be "from Wales." The Bailey surname was known in Scotland and Ireland. She was born in ABOUT 1729 (seek proof) and died possibly on 5 Dec 1810 OR 18 Aug 1828 (seek proof). It is recorded in many sources that she married Robert Kerr in 1763.

Once again, my SAVED bio is messed up in the save: and they came to our colo....... This is a logical place for him, IF he was moved here after the cemetery opened, but not likely. My 2nd guess is he could be buried on his homestead nearby. nies the same year, landing first in Pennsylvania, settled there in the SE where there were Scots-Irish areas. In 1783 following the Revolution, or 20 years later they moved again, settling in the Summerdean area of Augusta Co., Virginia.

I did not find any recorded marriages in Scotland or even Wales between a Robert and Elizabeth that sounded similar, around the year 1763.

They had 7 known Kerr children, most likely in Pennsylvania:
William (#1), abt 1763, died before 1769
Daniel: 1764 (Mary Kirkpatrick & Nancy Ann McCamy), below
Margaret: 14 Jan 1766 (Robt Dunlap), below
William: 1769 (Mary Ann Grove), below
David: 22 Feb 1772, below
Benjamin: abt 1776 (Elizabeth Myers)
Mary Elizabeth: abt 1777 (Isaac Gray or Grey)

Robert Kerr emigrated to America from Scotland in 1763, settling first near Philadelphia. He owned flour mills on the Schuylklll, staying until after the revolution and then moved down to Augusta Co., Virginia. He married Elizabeth Bayley of Wales, in Fifeshire, Scotland. It lists their children. "Robert Kerr, the emigrant ancestor, descended from John Kerr, of the Forest of Selkirk, Scotland, who was living in 1357 and whose ancestors came from France with William the Conqueror." Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography, under editorial supervisor Lyon Gardiner Tyler, LL, D, Vol. IV, New York, Lewis Historical Publishing Co., 1915, p 56-57.

Daughter Elizabeth married Isaac Gray/Grey, on 23 Aug 1796. Son William, married on 20 Dec 1796 to Mary A Grove, the daughter of neighbor Wendell Grove. Historical Atlas Augusta County, Virginia, by Joseph A Waddell and Jed Hotchkiss, 1885, Chicago, The Kerr and Dunlap Families, p 45. Plus it is in Lyman Chalkley's book, Vol 2.

Son Benjamin Kerr married Elizabeth Myers on 26 Jun 1796 in Augusta Co., Virginia, Rev. Wm Wilson officiated. First Marriage Records of Augusta Co., Virginia 1785 - 1813, by D.A.R. Thomas Hughart Chapter (does not list his parents).

Elizabeth Bailey Kerr was listed on various D.A.R. applications with no proof or burial location. Application #508806 in 1964-65 says she was born in 1729 and died 18 Aug 1828 and in parenthesis it says 5 Dec 1810. Regardless there are no sources, nor proof. It lists her burial place at Shemariah, but is undocumented also. Early on D.A.R. accepted unproven data, but no longer does. To date, I believe this D.A.R. app was the 1st and only source stating the Shemariah burial location and possibly the 1828 death date.

Robert Kerr, of Scotland, married Elizabeth Bailey, of Wales, 1763, and came to Pennsylvania, 1763, and to Virginia 1783..." It lists their children and marriage dates. No sources. Per Brief History of Kerr's and Kin, 1830-1930, by Vincent Brown Kerr, Staunton, Virginia, 1930, p 3.

Randy Stalnaker (this FaG memorial creator) kindly entered Robert and Elizabeth's burials at Shemariah Presbyterian Church Cemetery. They did live in this area and many of their kin are at Shemariah. To date there are no proven records to support them here. They are the earliest burials here. It was shared with me that the "church began in 1833." Discovered that the church was organized in 1832 and dissolved in 1967. Randy explained to me it was based on an old 1964-1965 DAR application (#508806) without documentation of any kind. This app lists two death dates, but I have listed the one more popularly recorded. The church records do not support it, cemetery surveys (1936 WPA, etc.) do not record it, nor have markers for them at Shemariah been located. I hope we can find a reliable source to prove she is here, like a local obituary, once and for all. This is a logical place for her, IF she was moved here after the cemetery opened, but not very likely. My 2nd guess is she could be buried on her homestead nearby.

* I have used the Bailey spelling that I come across the most. There are at least 2 Robert "Bailey" Dunlaps in the area in her family, Sgt. RBD, born 1839 and Pvt RBD, born 1843. Others Dunlaps have used Bailey as a middle name as well, but I've found other spellings used in the family, also.
