Ruth A. Forbes was the daughter of Peter & Sarah (Buckingham) Forbes. Both of her grandparents were among the first pioneer families to settle here. They came to in the 1830s, the Forbes in 1831 from Currituck Co, NC and the Buckingham family came in 1832 from Greene Co, PA.

Ruth had 8 siblings:
Mary Elizabeth, William, Infant sister, Isaac, Caleb, James C., Sarah Eleanor(Nellie) and Jane Esther.

Ruth played the coronet.

On 18 Nov 1863 Ruth married Irving Broaddus in Lacon. Irving was the son of Lunsford & Nancy (Gayle) Broaddus, both were born in Fredericksburg, VA.

The young couple were both born in Marshall county, and stayed here but for the last 8 or so years of their lives.

Ruth & Irving had 5 children:

1. Savella Alberta, 1864 - bef. 1940, marr. John Davidson, 4 ch
2. Cora Eva, 1868-1954, marr. Leroy Cook, 3 ch
3. Lily May, 1870-abt 1935, marr. Jas Jones, 1 ch

5. Nancy Ruth, 1878-1961, marr. Chas Younger, 4 ch

Ruth was known as "Aunt Ruth" by many of her friends.

In 1894 when they retired from farming Ruth & Irving left the old Broaddus homestead and moved in Lacon when they live until about 1915. They then moved to Beverly Hills, a Chicago suburb, to be near 2 of their daughters.
