Russell William Fitzwater, 82, of Moorefield, W.Va., died Friday, Dec, 17, 2004, at his home.

Mr. Fitzwater was born May 1, 1922, in Fort Run, W.Va., and was a son of the late Abraham Jackson Fitzwater and Mary Nancy Catherine Whetzel Fitzwater.

He retired from Railway Express Agency in 1975 and was an Army veteran of World War II of the 612 Pack Artillery having seen action in India and Burma. He received two bronze stars for serving in battle, a good conduct medal and a meritorious service award. He also was a veteran of the Korean War, having served at Fort Meade, Md. as a sergeant training troops.

Mr. Fitzwater was a member of the John M. Golliday Post No. 64 American Legion for 59 years, where he served as the post commander and sergeant of arms. He also served on the American Legion Board of Directors for 12 years and was an honorary member of the Moorefield Veteran's Honor Guard. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the South Branch Voiture No. 1535 40/8, the Walnut Grove Church of the Brethren and the Hardy County Rod and Gun Club.

He is survived by his wife of 57 Years, Geneva L. Funk Fitzwater; two sons, Larry A. Fitzwater of Germantown, Md., and Darrell W. Fitzwater of Edgewater, Fla.; a daughter, Paula Jeanne Fitzwater Treidel of Annapolis, Md.; a brother, Noah Fitzwater of Moorefield, W.Va.; two sisters, Shirley Hose and Maxine Shrout of Moorefield; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Pastors Harold Garber and Matt Lyon will conduct the funeral at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Moorefield Church of the Brethren. Burial will follow at the Olivet Cemetery with military rites by the Army and the Moorefield Veteran's Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. today at Fraley Funeral Home in Moorefield. A veteran's service will be conducted at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
