"Endres, Marie Alberta
MIDDLETON - Marie Alberta Endres, age 95, one of Madison's most distinguished musicians, died on Monday, September 13, 1999 at the Middleton Village Nursing Home. She was born in New Ulm, Minnesota on June 18, 1904 the daughter of Mathias and Amelia Endres. She was a member of this professional eminent family and is survived by one sister, the well-known pianist, Emma Endres-Kountz of Toledo, Ohio. After study in Chicago at the American Conservatory, and in New York at the Juilliard School, she returned to Madison to begin what was to become a noted career as a performer, teacher, and conductor. Head of the String Departments at both the Wisconsin School of music and Milton College, she was a Charter member, a soloist, Concert-master and Assistant Conductor of the Madison Civic Symphony for 35 years, the Founder and Conductor of the Madison String Sinfonia for 40 years, the Founder and Conductor of the Baroque Chorus of Madison for 20 years, and the Director of the St. James Catholic Church Choir for 25 years. Many awards and Citations followed in these years. Among them: In 1963 a University of Wisconsin testimonial from Faculty of the School of Music and the Board of Regents recognized 'her sound musicianship, inspired teaching and championship of String Music.' In 1965 Milton College conferred on her an Honorary Doctor of Music. In 1970 she received the Governor's Award for 'distinguished service and Performance in the Arts.' In 1998 she established the Marie Endres Memorial Scholarship Fund for String students through the Wisconsin Foundation for School Music. She was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters, Eulalia, Salome, Olive, Flora, and Mildred; and a brother, Roland. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 17, 1999 at HOLY REDEEMER CATHOLIC CHURCH, 120 W. Johnson St. The Rev. Bruce Hennington will officiate with burial in Resurrection Cemetery. Friends may call after 9:30 a.m. on Friday at the church until the service time. Memorials may be made to the Marie Endres Memorial Scholarship Fund, in care of Madison Community Foundation, 615 E. Washington Ave, Madison, WI 53704. The JOYCE FUNERAL HOME, 5701 Odana Road is in charge of arrangements."
