Velma Marie Newberry, 88, of St. Joseph passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at a St. Joseph health care center.

She was born April 14, 1922, in DeKalb, Mo., the daughter of Rutha and Comodore Dewey McDowell. She worked at the State Hospital in the food service department and was a homemaker. She enjoyed crafts and painting, and bingo and card games, but most of all, she like spending time with her family at family gatherings. For many years she made gifts for each of her grandchildren at Christmas time. She was a member of the Hoseana Tabernacle Church.

Velma was preceded in death by her husband, Thurman Newberry; her parents; a daughter, Kay Woolard; two sons, Thurman Jr. and George Newberry; her twin sister, Thelma Bowman; two other sisters, Opal Walker and Laveda Mae Anderson; and two grandsons, Leland "Andy" Orth and Donovan Wyatt Newberry.

She is survived by four daughters, Jane (Leland) Orth, Helen Marie (Robert)Nelson, Sue (Michael) Grable, and Neva (Albert) Helfrey; three sons, Lawrence (Susan) Newberry, Ronald (Ruth) Newberry, and Robert Newberry; a brother, Charles Wm. McDowell of Portland, Ore.; two sisters, Juanita Wood and Dorothy Potts; two daughters-in-law, Rita Newberry, Linda Newberry; 47 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, April 15, at Rupp Chapel.
Interment: Faucett Cemetery, Faucett, Mo.
