He was the son of Samuel and Eliza (Nelson) Heuston. He enlisted 6 Aug 1862 as a Corporal in Company H 74th IL Infantry and was discharged due to disability 6 Jan 1864. He re-enlisted at Marengo IL 14 Feb 1865 as a Private in Company G 153rd IL Infantry, and on 5 Aug 1864 he was transferred to non-combatant staff as a hospital steward. He was mustered out at Ft. Leavenworth KS 5 July 1865. William was a druggist. He died from senile dementia at the Elgin State Hospital.
His wife was Loretta Partch.
