Son of Azariah Barber Palmer and Mary Ann Lewis.

The 1890 special census of Hastings, Adams County, Nebraska lists Lucius Palmer as a surviving soldier. He served as a Corporal with Company H of the 62nd Illinois Infantry. His enlistment date is recorded as Feb. 1, 1861. The date of discharge is April 20, 1865. His length of service was 4 years, 2 months, 20 days.

L. B. PALMER, undertaker and dealer in furniture, was born at Iowa City, Iowa, May 17, 1845, and when five years of age removed, with his parents, to Sabula, Iowa; three years later, to Knox County, Ill.; and some time afterward to Monmouth, Ill. On February 1, 1862, he enlisted in the Sixty-second Illinois Infantry, and served four years and two months. Subsequently he was employed as a clerk in mercantile business at Kewanee, Ill., for three and a half years. Afterward farmed in Poweshiek County, Iowa, until he came to Nebraska in October, 1872. Locating in West Blue Precinct, Adams County, he engaged in farming 160 acres of land which he had homesteaded. In the spring of 1877, he came to Hastings, and engaged, in company with A. L. Wigton, in publishing the Hastings, Journal for one year, and also conducted a real estate office. He was appointed, about that time, Land Agent for the U. P. R. R. Co., which position he still holds. On February 26, 1881, he purchased his present business from A. Veith. Mr. Palmer is also a Notary Public, having been appointed in 1878. He was married, at Malcolm, Iowa, in 1870, to Lucinda M. Spooner, a native of Delaware County, Ohio. They have two living children (Elsie and Grove) and two deceased.

First Presbyterian Church records:

The Register Of Elders, found at the Adams County Historical Society lists Lucius B. Palmer elected as an elder and ordained 22 Aug. 1875 for a term of three years from Aug 16th. He was elected again, 18 Sept 1878, for another three year term to end 1 Oct 1881. He then was reelected a third time 10 Oct 1881 for another three year term to end 4 Oct 1884.

Lucius Palmer served as Trustee of the First Presbyterian Church from 25 Aug 1877 to 19 Jan 1879. He served as trustee for another term from 17 Sept 1879 to 19 Jan 1885.

The register of Communicants shows L. B. Palmer was admitted to the church 16 Nov 1873 by letter from Kewanee, Illinois, Presbyterian Chruch. His wife, Lucinda, joined by letter from the Presbyterian Church at Malcom, Iowa, on the same day. The record also shows that Lucinda and Lucius were dismissed to join the Hansen Presbyterian Church. Hansen is a small town north of Hastings. Another dismissal is recorded for both Lucius and Lucinda Palmer to Pasadena on 19 July 1892.
