OGDEN, UT - Edward J Hadley, 93, passed away on March 4, 2016.
He was born March 14, 1922 in Ogden, Utah, the seventh of 11 children, born to John Hipwell and Laura Thurston Hadley. Ed was raised and lived most of his life in Ogden, attending Ogden City Schools, graduating with his class from Ogden High School in 1940.
His college education was interrupted by the beginning of World War II, then upon returning to civilian life after the war, he continued his education and graduated from Weber College.
Ed entered the military service in 1942, and was commissioned an Ensign in the United States Naval Air Corp, as a Navy Pilot in B-24 and PB4Y Squadrons. After his discharge, Ed continued on in reserve status for 13 additional years, having served a total of 17 years in the Navy. Upon his discharge in January 1958, Ed was a full Lieutenant.
He married his sweetheart, Bettie Barry, on December 11, 1943 in Jacksonville, Florida. Ed and Bettie had a two year honeymoon traveling with the Navy before returning to Ogden. Their marriage was sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on August 31, 1944. Bettie passed away in 1995.
Ed was a member of the Ogden LDS Malan’s Peak Ward. He served in many positions on both ward and stake levels, including Elder’s Quorum and Seventies Quorum President, Stake High Council, High Priest’s Group leader, Executive Secretary to three Bishoprics, four years on a stake mission and a second Stake Mission at the Monroe Branch, serving for 13 years, from 1999 to 2012.
Ed worked eight years with the JC Penney Co. in Ogden and continued in retail as the manager of the Sprouse Reitz Co. variety stores in Clearfield, Ogden, and Centerville for 32 years, retiring in 1984.
Ed is survived by his five children: E. Barry (Marlene) Hadley, of North Ogden, J. Mark (Kimberly) Hadley, of North Ogden, Ryon M. (Suzan) Hadley, of Pleasant View, Colleen (Merlin) Pontius, of North Ogden, and Maureen (Bob) Condie, of Windsor, CO; 18 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren, with number 43 on the way; and one surviving sister, Geraldine Williams, of Bountiful.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Bettie; two grandsons: Shawn Hadley and Scott Pontius; and a great-granddaughter, Abigail Hadley.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, March 11, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Friday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary.
