James served in the Confederate Army in the same unit as his father, Sidney. James was a Private in Company E of the 28th Tennessee Confederate Infantry Regiment. Remarkably James served from 1861-65 and was with the Army of Tennessee when it surrendered to General Sherman in North Carolina in 1865. Some of the battles the 28th participated in were: Fishing Creek or Mill Springs KY, Shiloh TN, Port Hudson LA, Chickamagua GA, Murfreesboro TN, Atlanta GA, and Franklin TN. James moved to Mississippi after the War with his parents. He as well as his mother died of yellow fever, a brutal disease, in Hill House, Mississippi. His grave has not been found but it is said he is buried near his mother. James was married to Luella Seale on February 28, 1877 in Coahoma Co., Miss. and they had two children one of which was Silas Sydney Dudney, Sr.
