Josephine Martha (Kipe) Spielman, 97, of Sharpsburg, Maryland, passed from this life on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at Fahrney-Keedy Home & Village in Boonsboro, Maryland.

Born on November 25, 1918, in Pennersville, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Carl George Kipe, Sr. and Alverta Jane (Harbaugh) Kipe. Her husband, Leon C. Spielman, preceded her in death on February 26, 1992.

Known to her friends as Jo, she was involved in many activities at the Sharpsburg Church of the Brethren. She had also been a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star Olive Branch Chapter 34 (now Chapter 89 of Hagerstown), and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Jo and her late husband operated the Village Shop Antiques in Sharpsburg for approximately 20 years, where Jo sold many of her braided rugs. Jo also taught many people the art of braiding rugs.

She had a passion for flowers and enjoyed visiting other flower gardens. She also had a love for traveling, having visited 48 of the 50 states with her husband.

Her greatest joy were her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and she will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends.

She is survived by her son, George B. Spielman of Sharpsburg; one sister, Mary Ann Tihey of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; four grandchildren, Melinda Hofe and husband Michael of Gapland, Maryland, George W. Spielman of Garretts Mill, Maryland, Kelli Lee Smith of Georgia, and Staci Jo Mitchell of Texas; seven great grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Gary L. Spielman; one grandson, Matthew B. Smith; one brother, Carl Kipe, Jr.; and three sisters, Janet Hahn, Geraldine Ross, and Charlotte Poole.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 13, 2016, at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike in Boonsboro. Rev. Twyla Rowe and Rev. Joseph C. Burdette, Sr. will officiate. Final resting place ceremonies will follow at the Brownsville Heights Cemetery in Brownsville, Maryland.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, February 12, 2016 at the funeral home.
