"Dave" Smith was born in Putneyville, Mahoning, Armstrong, PA, the son of Church Henry Smith and Ann Mariah Schrecengost. He lived in Wayne and Boggs Townships. He married Susanna Lena Houser between 1870 and 1872 in Armstrong County, PA. They were the parents of nine children. Dave died in the Catfish coal mine in Madison, Clarion, PA on a hill near Conneration. He had a bruise on his temple. His young son, Benjamin Clyde, was in the mine at the time. Dave's body was transported mainly by train from Catfish to Templeton, where he was buried.
