Inscription
William Carroll Stanley never served in the Civil War. It is proven through county court house records that he did not leave East Texas during the war and he never served. There was a soldier in Alabama named William Stanley and William Carroll was thought to be he. This soldier was born in 1810 and William Carroll in 1820. Both were from Alabama, so it is understandable why the mix-up happened. Dates on the stone are correct, but info about him being in the war is not. Attempts have been made to replace the stone, but as of yet, it has not been removed, nor replaced. Vance Hill, ggg grandson of William Carroll Stanley.
