Funeral services for Thomas "Tom" Hilliary Shields Jr., age 91, of Lake Providence, Louisiana will be 1:00PM, Saturday, February 13, 2016 at the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Lake Providence with Father Mark Watson officiating. Services are under the direction of Cox Funeral Home. Visitation will be Saturday from 11:00AM until time of service at the church.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Roby Shields; grandson, Bart Shields; great-grandchild, Rheagan Shields; parents, Thomas Hilliary Shields and Katherine Harned Shields; brother, Butch Shields; sister, Carolyn Fair.

Mr. Tom Shields was a graduate of Bloomfield High School in Bloomfield, Kentucky. He served his country during WWII in the United States Navy on the USS Alabama and during the Korean War on the USS Bon Homme Richard. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Lake Providence. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He served his community as a Police Juror for East Carroll Parish, also as Justice of Peace. He served on many boards, the ASCS Board, First National Bank Board, East Carroll Parish Library Board, and the Byerly House Board of Directors. He loved his family, church, and community.

Tom is survived by his daughter, Kitty Shields of Houston, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Tommy Shields III and Karen Shields of Iowa, Louisiana; son and daughter-in-law, Roby Shields and Lee Shields of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; son and daughter-in-law, Harry Shields and Jere Shields of Thibodaux, Louisiana; son, Ted Shields of Bardstown, Kentucky; 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild; sister, Ann Hahn and husband Virgil of Tyler, Texas.

A former Bardstown resident, Mr. Thomas Hillary Shields, Jr., age 91, passed away February 6, 2016 in Oak Grove, Louisiana. He was born on June 24, 1924 in Bloomfield to the late and former Sheriff and Senator Thomas H. and Katherine Harned Shields, Sr. He was a graduate of Bloomfield High School, served his country during WWII in the United States Navy on the USS Alabama and during the Korean War on the USS Bon Homme Richard. He remained active in the American Legion as well as ship reunions. He was a successful farmer, cattleman and operated a cotton gin. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Lake Providence and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Tom served his community as a magistrate for East Carroll Parish, also as Justice of Peace. He served on many boards, the ASCS, First National Bank for over 30 years, East Carroll Parish Prison Farm, Louisiana Cotton Museum and the Boy Scouts.

He was also preceded in death by his wife of 68 years Mary Roby Shields, brother, Butch Shields and a sister, Carolyn Fair.

He is survived by his daughter, Kitty Shields, Houston, Texas, 4 sons, Tommy (Karen) Shields III, Iowa, LA., Roby (Lee) Shields, Baton Rouge, LA., Harry (Jere) Shields, Thibodaux, LA and Ted Shields of Bardstown. He is also survived by one sister, Ann (Virgil) Hahn of Tyler, Texas and 14 grandchildren, several great grandchildren one 1 great great grandchild.

A graveside inurnment service for Thomas H. Shields, Jr., will be Saturday, June 18, 2016at 11:00am at Bardstown Cemetery. Deacon Arnold Downs will officiate. Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home, 1475 New Shepherdsville Road is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be sent to the USS Battleship Alabama Memorial Fund, PO Box 65, Mobile, AL 36603.
