DE SOTO - Dr. Albert Craig, a former Pinellas County, Florida, educator and founding president of Valencia Junior College near Orlando, Florida, passed away on Friday, May 30, 1997.

Albert Thomas Craig was born in De Soto, one of five children of Alta and Fred Craig, a coal miner. He received a bachelor's degree at the University of Southern Illinois, a master's degree at the University of Illinois and a doctorate at Florida State University.

Before moving to Florida in 1953, he was recalled by the military during the Korean War and served as chief of the schools branch, 5th Army Headquarters, Chicago. He also saw duty in Tokyo as a briefing officer for Gen. Mark Clark, commander of U.N. and U.S. forces in the Far East. During World War II, he rose from the rank of private to major and was an infantry officer in the European Theater.

His wife Ruth passed away in 1976. Survivors include two sons, Jack of St. Petersburg, FL and Stephen of Gainsville, FL; his twin brother, Calvert "Cal" Craig, of Tampa, FL; his sister, Vivian Bridges, of De Soto; four grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Private services were at Blount, Curry and Roel Funeral Homes and Cemeteries. Memorial Park Chapel was in charge.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association, Florida Affiliates, West Central Area, 9900 Dr. M.L. King Jr St. N, St. Petersburg, FL 33716.
