John S. Charles age 73 years, 11 months and 12 days died suddenly at his home. No. 128 Elizabeth street, Lewistown Junction. Sunday night at 11:25 from heart disease. Mr. Charles enjoyed a hearty supper and was apparently enjoying his usual health when he retired about 11 as near as his family now recall. A few minutes later he was found dead when other member of the family retired. Deceased was a native of Pequea township, Lancaster county, PA. born December 24, 1847 and was a son of Samuel and Fanny Charles. Mr. Charles had been employed at the Standard Steel works for the past fourteen years and up until a year ago when he was furloughed on account of reduction in force. He is survived by his wife who was Amanda Gohn, a native of Mt. Joy, Lancaster county; also eight sons and two daughters. Mrs. Frank Burke, Samuel Charles, DeKalb, Ill; Daniel Charles, Sharon, Benjamin Charles, Hubbard, Ohio; Harry, Reid, Walter, Elmer and John at home and Mrs. Clifford Barnham, Scranton, Pa. Two brothers and one sister also survive, Aaron and Elam Charles of Quarryville, Lancaster county and Mrs. Martha Eshelman, New Providence, PA. The funeral services will be held at his late home, Wednesday evening about 8:30 and the funeral party will leave Thursday morning on train No 34, at 9:09 a.m. for Lancaster, thence to Beohm's Methodist church where additional services will be held Thursdays afternoon and the body interred in the Beohm's church cemetery. Deceased was a veteran of the Civil war he having served six months in company I, 20th Penna. Cavalry, enlisted June 24th 1863 and was discharged by virtue of expiration of enlistment on January 6th 1864. {unknown newspaper obit}
