JAMES ERWIN SMITH
James Erwin Smith, son of Andrew Wilson and Mattie Lucinda Erwin Smith, was born on Nov. 19, 1890, at Huntsville, Ala., and passed away quietly at his home in Lamoni on Jan. 31 at the age of 59 years, 2 months, and 12 days.

While still a small boy he moved with his parents to Lima, Ohio, where he grew to manhood. It was at Lima, that he met his wife, Miss Grayce Iona Chilcote and they were united in holy matrimony on April 29, 1911. To this union were been five children: Ruth Iona (Mrs. Millard Blake), Opal Irene (Mrs. Oren Allen), Leila Maye (Mrs. J. W. Sutherlin), Willis Wilson, and Joseph Paul, both of the home.

It was also at Lima where he was convinced of the truthfulness of the teachings of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and he was baptized by Brother James McConnoughy on Feb. 14, 1915.

The following year the family moved to Sperry, Okla., and later to Tulsa and Winfield, Kans., where he was a valued and experienced foreman in the oil fields for more than 13 years.

On Jan. 1, 1929, he moved to Lamoni to bring his family to this spiritual environment and entered into a business which he conducted until forced to retire due to failing health. For the past 10 years, he was under the doctor's care, but despite his physical condition, he remained cheerful, patient, and determined to keep his family happy.

In the last hours of his life, he received great comfort and blessing through the sacrament of administration and passed away very quietly, as though going to sleep. The memory of this manifestation will remain a comfort to the members of the family.

His mother preceded him in death passing away on Sept. 20, 1938.

Members of the family who survive include his devoted wife and their five children: Mrs. Blake, of Moline, Kans.; Mrs. Allen, of Lamoni; Mrs. Sutherlin, of Davenport: Willis and Joseph of the home; six grandchildren: Richard Erwin Blake and Caryl Blake, Justus Sheffield, David Oren, Victory Irene and Linda Annette Allen, of Lamoni; his father, Andrew Wilson Smith, Tulsa, Okla.; a sister, Mrs. Leona Rumsey, of Sperry, Okla.; and a brother, John A., of Tulsa, Okla. In addition to these relatives, he will also be remembered by many close friends, former business associates and neighbors.

You cannot say, you must not say
That he is dead. He is just away.
With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand
He has wandered into an unknown land,
And left us dreaming how very fair
It needs must be, since he lingers there;
So think of him faring on, as dear
in the love of There as the love of Here,
Think of him still as the same, and say
He is not dead, he is just away.
