Capt John Alexander was b 24 Jan 1806, North Haven, the s/o Henry Alexander Jr & his 1st wife Mercy Beverage. He d 27 Feb 1861, North Haven.


John married Hannah Randall Crockett on 7 Apr 1842, North Haven, married by Deacon Samuel Young, Jr. Hannah was b 10 Aug 1818, North Haven, the d/o Isaac Crockett 3rd & Hannah Allen. She d May 1885, North Haven.


John & Hannah had 4 children, all born North Haven:

1. James Beverage Alexander: 20 Jan 1843 - 2 Dec 1832, Camden, Me. Civil War veteran.

2. Ezekiel A Alexander (Capt): 20 Sept 1845 - 4 July 1917, Oakland, Ca. Civil War veteran.

3. George Allan Alexander: 6 June 1848 - 15 Jan 1917, North Haven

4. Sarah Maria Alexander: 10 June 1850 - 18 May 1871, North Haven (in childbirth).


John was a fisherman & a master mariner. He was co-owner of the 16-tn Montezuma & 13-ton Juno.


In 1840, John is on North Haven residing with his father & step-mother, probably one of the 2 working in "sea navigation."


On 1 June 1854, John was included in North Haven's Tax Assessment. The first page is missing (2016), but he had no sheep or swine & owned 1/8th of the 13-ton ship "Juno" (valued at $134) and 25% of the 16-ton "Montezuma" (valued at $200). Real estate value: $350. Personal property value: $385. Total Tax Assessment: $735.


In 1855, John was enumerated for North Haven's Tax Assessment. He had 1 poll, 21 acres w/ 1 house & 1 barn. He had 1 3-year-old cow, 1 1-year-old cow and 1 swine. He owned 16% of the 65-ton "Montezuma" which was valued at $225. Real estate value: $350. Personal property value: $412. Total Tax Assessment: $762.


Also in 1855, 10-year-old son Ezekiel "fell into the family well, carrying with him his mother's brass preserving kettle. When help came, in answer to his shouts, he not only assured his rescuers that he was unharmed but had clung to the kettle.

With him is his 42-year-old wife, Hannah, and children James (ae 17, fisherman), Ezekiel (ae 15, fisherman), George (ae 12) and Sarah (ae 10). They are living between his brother William Alexander (who has in his household their widowed mother & unmarried siblings) and Norwood Beverage

In 1880, 61-year-old Hannah is residing with her son George on North Haven. George is age 31, and a fisherman.
