George Allan Alexander was b 6 Oct 1848, North Haven, Me, the s/o Capt John Alexander & Hannah Randall Crockett. He d 15 Jan 1917, North Haven, Me.


George married Sarah "Sadie" Helen Judkins on 1 Jan 1893, Deer Isle, married by Rev David Smith. Sadie was b 21 Sept 1867, Deer Isle, the d/o Capt Samuel Webb Judkins & Adelia Marie Crockett. She d 18 Mar 1948, Dresden, Me. Sadie married 1st John S Judkins on 31 July 1887, Deer Isle, married by Rev George F Bradford. He was b 9 Dec 1862, Deer Isle, the s/o Joseph Judkins . John d 18 Mar 1894, Boston, Ma (divorced).

George and Sadie lived on the farm of his parents off the Middle Rd, North Haven. He was a farmer as well as a fisherman. He spent a number of seasons in Alaska with the salmon canneries.


George became known as an outstanding Marine Navigation teacher, and students from all the area came to him. "The Rev John Alexander, s/o of George Alexander, in writing about his father's teaching of navigation recalls: 'Father had them use a sextant to shoot the sun and figure out their position right there on the island. John Smith took his sight and did the figuring. Then Father said, "This is remarkable! I thought we were here in Penobscot Bay but your figures show we are in Buffalo, New York!" I am sure whatever mistake he made he didn't make it again.' " Pulpit Harbor: 200 years, p 40.


From Alan G Alexander: Sarah (Sadie) also in her early years worked in Boston as a seamstress in a factory making men's clothing and was a very accomplished seamstress. She made many of our clothes as we were growing up.


In 1870, 22-year-old George is a mariner on North Haven, residing with his widowed mother Hannah (ae 51), brother James (27) and his family, and brother Ezekiel (ae 25).


In 1880, 31-year-old George is living on North Haven, working as a fisherman. Living with him is his mother, 61-year-old Hannah.


George also participated in the maiden voyage of the steamship "Queen of the Pacific" from 7 June 1882 - 23 Aug 1882 as she made her way from Philadelphia through the Strait of Magellan to the West Coast. George was the Second Officer and Fremont Beverage was the Purser. His brother, Ezekiel A was the Master of the vessel.


In March 1885, at the annual town meeting, the town voted to "grant its rights at the Fresh Pond and alll its egress waters for a term of 10 years to George Alexander for the purpose of breeding and stocking the same with fish, and Alexander to pay the town 10% of the income annually after 5 years."


In 1900, 51-year-old George and 32-year-old Sadie are on North Haven where he is working as a farmer. George cites birth of Oct 1848; Sadie cites Sept 1867. They've been married for 7 years, having had 3 children, all of whom are alive for the census. Son Leonard F, 3, was born March 1897. Son John B, 1, was born Sept 1898. Also with them was 12-year-old Muriel Judkins, born Jan 1888.

In 1910, 62-year George and his 42-year-old wife Sadie are residing on the Middle Road on North Haven where he working as a farmer. He and Sadie have been married for 17 years, the first marriage for him and the 2nd for her. Sadie cites she's had 5 children, all of whom were alive for the census and residing with the family. Children are step-daughter, Muriel Judson (ae 22), Leonard E F (Alexander) (ae 12), John B (ae 11), Hannah M (ae 9), and Lawrence G (ae 6).


George's Town Offices: Juror: 1888; Superintending School Committee in 1884-5, 1887, 1902, 1906 (1st/West District), 1907, 1909-1910; School Supervisor: 1887; Auditor: 1907, 1909-1910.


Death Record: George Alexander died Jan 15, 1917 at North Haven at the age of 69 yrs 3 mos 9 days. Born on North Haven on 6 Oct 1848, he was the son of John Alexander (born North Haven, mariner) and Anna Crockett (born Vinalhaven). Cause of death was cerebral hemorrhage combined with arteriosclerosis.


On 20 Feb 1917, wife Sadie H Alexander was appointed administratrix of George Alexander's estate. Knox Co Probate Court Case Number 8007.


In the early 1920's, widow Sadie Alexander removed to Dresden, Me, but returned to North Haven.


In 1930, widowed 62-year-old Sarah is working for Hiram Stone Beverage as a housekeeper. She cites that she was 19 at the time of her first marriage.
