Lonnie Dean Bowman, 62, passed away Jan. 2, 2016, in Freeman, South Dakota, of natural causes. He was one month short of being 63.

He was born February 2, 1952, in Hastings, Nebraska. Lonnie was the son of Leo Calvin Bowman and Nola Belle Haney Bowman and was the seventh out of ten children.

Two months after turning seventeen Lonnie joined the Army. After completion of basic training at Fort Ord, California he received medical corp training at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. A month after turning eighteen he was shipped off to the central highlands of Vietnam where he fought in the jungles with the 4th Infantry Division. He was a combat medic, which simply meant that, along with being an infantryman, he also tended to his wounded buddies. Lonnie seldom talked about those experiences but he was affected deeply by them.

During his service he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Combat Medical Badge, Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, two Overseas Service Bars, Expert Rifle (M14) and Expert Rifle (M16).

He married Roxie Lea (McGinn) Blue in 1975. Roxie was a young widow who was raising an infant son, Jeremy. During their marriage Lonnie and Roxie had one more son, Israel. They divorced in 1997.

He was then married briefly to Sandra Kay Boggess in which period their son, Zachary was born.

Lonnie was a over the road truck driver for many years. He loved traveling the country and seeing different places. He loved spending time with friends and family when he wasn't on the road. His abrasive facade masked a heart of gold. He enjoyed playing guitar, shooting pool, playing poker and listening to music. He loved razzing everyone and always tried to make people smile. He will be missed dearly.

Lonnie is preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Nola; brother, Harold; sisters, Marilyn, Sharon and Karen. He is survived by three sons, Jeremy Blue of Arizona, Israel Bowman of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Zachary Taylor Bowman of Sweetwater, Texas; his brothers, Ronnie Bowman of Molino, Fla., Mark Bowman of Denver, Colo., and Rick Bowman of Garden City, Kansas; sisters, Connie Lyons of Dolton, South Dakota, and Vicky Sinn of Brighton, Colo.; also nieces and nephews too numerous to list.

Graveside services with military honors were conducted for Lonnie at 9:30am on September 16, 2016. He was lain to rest at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery beside his nephew, Dexter Redburn .
