Laura was born 21 April 1864 in Adamsville, Muskingum County, Ohio, the seventh of eight children of Casper Melcher and Elizabeth Stiverson. Laura had three half-siblings, Elizabeth, John, and Mary Anne, from her Father’s first marriage to Mary Arnold.

Laura married William James Slater 4 February 1890 in Washington, D.C. William was born 5 July 1866 in Washington, D.C., the son of John Slater. William was an expert typist and telegrapher, and during World War I, he handled many of the longest and most secret cablegrams of official content from European governments to top U.S. executives and statesmen in Washington, D.C.

Laura and William had a daughter Laura Elinor Slater Gauss (1891-1952).

William died 20 May 1919 in Washington, D.C.

Laura survived her husband and lived on in Washington, D.C. near her only daughter. She was residing at 6713 Piney Branch Road, N.W., at the time of her eighty-second birthday. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Reformation in that city.

Laura died November 27, 1949 in Washington, D.C. The following obituary for Laura appeared in the Washington Post Newspaper, Washington, D.C., 28 November 1949:

Mrs. Slater Dies; 60 Years D.C., Resident

Mrs. Laura C. Slater, 85, widow of William James Slater, former manager of the main office of the Postal Telegraph Company here, died yesterday in her home 6713 Piney Branch Road, N.W., after a brief illness. A native of Muskingum County, Ohio, Mrs. Slater lived in the District for 60 years, and was an active member of the Reformaton Lutheran Church, 212 East Capitol Street. Mrs. Slater was also a member of Martha Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Elinor Gauss, 728 Whittier Street, N.W., and two grandchildren, Violet E. Gauss of Warren, Ohio, and Davis S. Gauss of Washington and Philadelphia. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hines Funeral Home, 2901 14th Street, NW. Burial will be in Congressional Cemetery.
